Thiem offers olive branch to Williams

Dominic Thiem wants to make amends with Serena Williams for a misunderstanding at the French Open by partnering her in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon or the US Open.

Thiem was unhappy at being asked to move his press conference to make way for Williams in the wake of her third round defeat at Roland Garros earlier this month.

The Austrian, who went on to finish runner-up to Rafael Nadal, accused Williams of showing 'bad personality' and treating him like a 'junior' but he accepts the tournament organisers were to blame for the incident.

And in an attempt to put the matter behind them, Thiem has offered to play doubles with Serena Williams at Wimbledon.

"Probably it was not Serena's mistake. I find her achievements unbelievable, sensational." Thiem told reporters. "I would like to make amends with her in Wimbledon or US Open mixed doubles."

"In retrospect, it was funny that such an organisational mistake happened at a Grand Slam tournament. What I do not understand is that it blew up so much."

Thiem has only made it beyond the second round at Wimbledon once in five visits but the 25-year-old is confident of putting that right this year.

"Wimbledon is special, it is the most prestigious tournament in the world," he added.

"I want to show myself better than last year. At that time I was slightly injured and had to give up in the first round [he retired midway through his opening round match against Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis]. Now I see good chances to get relatively far."
