Williams on the verge of history

Serena Williams is just one win away from equalling Margaret Court's Grand Slam title record of 24 after she booked her place in Saturday's Wimbledon final with a comfortable win over Barbora Strycova.

Williams took less than an hour to record a 6-1 6-2 over the Czech on Centre Court to set-up a final meeting with Simona Halep on Saturday.

The 37-year-old dominated proceedings right from the start breaking twice to move 5-1 ahead and she managed to save three break points on her own serve to claiming the opening set.

Strycova appeared to be suffering from a leg injury at the start of the second set but she held serve in her first two service games until a double-break from Williams sealed an easy victory in 59 minutes.

“It feels good to be in the final again after the year I have had,” Williams said. “I have just needed matches to feel good and do what I do best and that is play tennis.

“I love what I do. I have a great job and I am still pretty good at it. I get a remarkable experience every time.”

Looking ahead to Saturday's final against Halep, Williams added: "There's so many impressive things about her. I think obviously her tenacity. I think her ability to improve every time, just to keep improving. Her ability to find power. You can't underestimate her. She's like a little powerhouse.

"She finished the year number one twice in a row. I feel like she's back. She wants to prove that she can do it again."
